hi! i will be graduating from college this upcoming april and i have no idea what i'm going to do. i always wanted to be a doctor but unfortunately chemistry just does not click for me. i am a psychology major, but i have no interest in being a therapist or a counselor or anything like that. could you give me some random career ideas? i've been thinking about going into the business world and maybe being a human resources consultant or a labor relations manager but i havent done any relevant internships because i always thought i would be applying to medical/nursing school once i graduated. i don't really want to spend much time "exploring" because i'm tired of being a broke student, and ready to be making money. i know people say "do what you love" or "do what you have a passion for" but i don't really have a passion for anything (other than medicine but i'm just not smart enough). this whole thing is giving me terrible anxiety and making me even more depressed and stressed out! any advice would be great! thanks :
Being "smart enough" for medicine is the biggest stigma that in my opinion is preventing the truly great doctors from pursuing the careers they are meant to pursue. If you are good at biology that is ALL that matters. Doing well in chemistry in college has very little prediction of future success in the world of clinical medicine. They teach you to understand the granularity of molecules so that you have basic scientific knowledge when you start working with larger organ systems. I am not saying it is unimportant just that it should DEFINITELY not be the reason you don't become a doctor. I had a lot of trouble with organic chemistry, I repeated the course once and I got a C. I also got into my first choice medical school. Don't give up a dream because you don't think your smart enough. I guarantee the problem isn't you--its your teacher. Once I changed teachers I loved O-Chem and did great in it. It could also be the way you study. I hope that you find your way and I really hope you find the confidence you need to stick with it.

hey jen! what are you doing right now with work and school? how did the job in san francisco go?
ReplyDeleteIt went great! It was so amazing and fun I loved with all my heart. I now have my MBA, but now I am not sure what my next is going to be. I think I am going to work for awhile in the pharmaceutical industry, which I love because it combines my love for business and science and then apply to school again for my MPH (masters in public health). Hope that answers your questions xox
ReplyDeleteWhat you do has NOTHING to do with science, stop claiming that!!!!
Deletewhat do you plan to do with your MPH?
ReplyDeleteCool about your MPH plans but why are you not going to med school if u got into your first choice?? All that MCAT studying!!
ReplyDeleteWow. Sure seems you are not interested in actually W O R K I N G for a living. You come across quite immature.
ReplyDeleteHey Troll. Speaking of immature...
DeleteGood for you Jen! :D
ReplyDeleteI know you're busy girl but answer your fans' questions! xo
ReplyDeleteJEN ANSWER YOUR FANS QueSTIONS!! PLEASE!!
ReplyDeleteHi Jen! It's awesome that you take education so seriously and I look to you for inspiration to do well and accomplish my own goals. Any advice on studying for the GMAT and doing your MBA in general?
ReplyDeletecome on, organic chemistry is really not hard, you just need brains for it. I find it worrying how little grasp most doctors have of chemistry in general. To me, you don't need to be super brainy to actually become an MD, you only need money, discipline and be able to memorize a lot of stuff, but you don't need to be super smart.
ReplyDeleteHello Jenn,
ReplyDeletefirst of i want to let you know
i look up to you and admire how you have the brains/beauty
my question is the following
WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE NOT TO ATTEND MEDICAL SCHOOL?
because I am aware you were accepted to your top choice.
Was it because of the high level of stress/responsibility being a physician brings?
Hi Jenn,
ReplyDeleteI have a dilemma, I am not sure whether PA/medical school is the right choice for me anymore. I am not sure I can deal with the stress and workload that comes when being responsible for someone elses health or well being. I love science though and I love the health field, but I most LOVE helping others. What made you choose your career path and are you happy with it? Are you happy with your choice not going to medical school, and why?
